Pickleball Open Play Sessions by Location
Beach Communities
Barnes is a great tennis, pickleball and padel club. It's very well organized and has good quality courts. However depending on the time of the day the wind can be a big factor and plays havoc with pickleball. They do manage the sessions well so that they only let a certain number of people in, but that's quite a high number so it can become very crowded.

Located in the Mission Bay Resort hotel, it uses portable nets on tennis court lines. Some of the fences are dangerously close to the back of the courts. You can park for free on the street outside the entrance to the hotel and then walk in. Yael does lots of intro classes. A bit randomly organized so sometimes there's nobody in charge and nobody separating advanced players from beginners.

Understanding Skill Levels and Etiquette
Most San Diego open play sessions use a "paddle saddle" or rotation system. To ensure the best experience, it helps to know your rating:
Beginner (2.0-3.0): Focuses on learning the rules, serving, and basic dinking.
Intermediate (3.5-4.0): The most common level in SD, involving strategic third-shot drops and faster-paced rallies.
Advanced (4.5+): High-intensity play often found at "Challenge Courts" like those in Balboa Park or during specific ladder nights.
